    Thanks, Paul — ‘Underneath, that is what (and maybe where) soul is!’ Wouldn’t it be great to stand at the top of Jeffers’ tower, and look west all day, beneath the surfaces of sky and sea? Mackey’s right: we’d see ‘what face is only front for.’ Might scare us to death, but we’d see!

    Jeffers looks hewn from the same stone as his tower, doesn’t he?
